The structures of television advertisements relate to its form, style and the codes and conventions used by media producers. Over the next series of blog posts I will discuss each of these in detail with examples.

Form - Narrative Structures
A narrative in a advert consists off characters, settings, conflicts and resolutions. There are many ways to tell a story in an advert, one way to tell a story is a linear advert this means the story is told with a beginning middle and end. Whereas a non linear advert doesnt have a struture it can start end to beginning . Another way to tell a story in an advert is an open ended advert, this is where a series of adverts fit together telling a story and giving different endings. A Closed advert is where the story ends and it doesnt carry on in the next advert the narrative ends in that advert.
Tsvetan Todorov-Equilibrium.
This is where all stories start in equilibruim state, which then has a problem setting off a chain of events then they resolve it at the end.
The BT adverts are an example of open ended adverts , this is because in each advert they tell a story and the next advert they make carries it on.

Introduction
Advertising is all around and is integral to everyday life. It is one of the largest sectors of the media industry, adverts being presented in a wide range of media such as television, film, radio, magazine, posters, billboards, the press, and the Internet. Of all of these, television advertising probably has the highest profile, some television advertisements being so effective and memorable that they become classics and part of the cultural background for a whole generation of viewers. Television is used to market almost every product one can imagine from everyday consumables, like washing powder, to extravagant sports cars, whilst some advertisements promote a service such as insurance, banking or vehicle breakdown cover.
Television advertising has become more and more sophisticated, utilising the very latest digital production techniques. Content and style can be simple or complex, using traditional narrative structures or less obvious surrealist imagery, and messages can be overt or understated.
I have created this blog to show my understanding of the structures and techniques used in television advertisements.
I have covered structures relating to form, style and the codes and conventions used in adverts.
I have also discussed with my examples the different techniques that advertisers used to promote a product.

Form - Animation
Animation has become more popular in advertisement and is used more frequently. It can be used in different ways from hand drawn to computer generated. Using animation over normal actors can have different benefits, they can have a certain appeal that is difficult to create with actors or actresses. It can be changed easily to go with time and so they can be run for long periods of time.
The Digital Switch Over Adverts use computer animation to create a character which is a symbol of Digital UK. The robot personificates Digital TV, it makes it seem like its a person and it has feelings and its a friend when we all know its just TV.

Form - Documentary
A documentary advert is where the advert tries to convince viewers that the claims they are making are true. The person in the advert will normally be an expert who works with the product and is an expert. An example of this is the Nurofen advert, this claims that its a fast working tablet which targets the pain and gets to work in just 10 minutes. It says it can be used for headaches, migraines, back pain, muscle pain, and toothaches.
Form - Stand Alone/Series
A stand alone advert is where it can be shown on its on at any time. An example of this is the Hovis advert where the boy goes through the significant events in history in the space of 1 minute 30 seconds, showing you the that hovis has been around for years and is still the best bread. This advert is a stand alone advert because it is a story told in one advert rather then a series of adverts.
A series advert is where a story is told through out a number of adverts, each adverts carries on from the previous advert. The characters and the story line stays the same in all the adverts. Here is an example of a series advert by PG tips, the monkey and the guy stay the same even though the story changes.

Form - Talking Heads
Talking heads advert are where they interview everyday people who give them there opions and ideas. We can relate to these adverts and people in them because there every day people and there not famous or celebritys. The interviewer will gather a group of people and ask them questions to do with the product/products rather then getting one person or a celebrity.
This is an example of a talking head advert, in this advert the woman go to asda and do the price guarantee challenge and then talk about how much they have saved. This appeals to woman because most woman do they shopping in todays household, because the woman in the advert are normal woman it makes you think you can do that and save some money.
